Schedule: Provide the DJ with a schedule of planned events (cake cutting, speeches, live acts etc) if you have additional things happening on the night. It does not have to be exact, but it will give him and idea of how to plan his music policy for the night.

Announcements: Don’t be scared to ask the DJ on the night to change the music or give announcements.

Playlist

Give the DJ a playlist: It does not need to be minute by minute songs (this does happen) but some songs from each genre. This will give the DJ an idea of the style and fashion of the party \ event. For example if you provide a list of some old skool Garage, with a few of the latest RnB and Reggae, the DJ know (should know) to avoid playing 60’s / 70’s pop as it is unlikely to go down well. He will also know not prepare any crates \ or playlist for the night in that genre and focus on the music genre requested. Another good tip if you would really like a certain song(s) not to be played make sure you let the DJ know.

Booking a DJ for your event can be a stressful decision. Whatever the occasion be it a Wedding, Birthday, Reception, Anniversary, Kids Party or Christmas Party you will need to consider what DJ, Band or Entertainer will best suite the occasion.

So if you decide to book a DJ - how do you choose the right DJ for you?

Well we have the following tips to help you decide on what DJ to book....

Price

How much does a DJ cost : You get what you pay for (but obviously you pay what you can afford!) so make sure you budget well in advance. DJ’s vary in cost and in skill set as well as equipment, sound and lighting. Quotes can vary from DJ’s willing to provide services from as little as £50 to £1000+. If you are expecting, smoke machines and specialist lighting for a 1000+ guest don't book the £50 DJ! They will not be providing the speaker power nor the lighting for a party of that size.

Music Genre

Music Genre: It is very rare that a friend of a friend’s Drum & Bass DJ will be able to help with your great Nan’s Birthday party. Well of course they maybe cheaper but it is unlikely they will enjoy the night and more than likely they will ask you for every possible song that will be requested on the night. It is worth discussing the music policy with the DJ well in advance (if you planned it well in advance and did not to wait until last minute to book your DJ #LastMinuteDJ).

It is possible that good DJ who is not comfortable with the music genre or theme of the event will either recommended another DJ or add an additional DJ to the booking. The only way for you to feel more comfortable is to look at previous work (Social Media, Websites and Soundcloud) and perhaps even ask for a reference – at the end of the day they will be working for you.

Equipment

DJ Equipment: It is always good to confirm the DJ you are using will bring the equipment you expect and the venue size is able to accommodate the rig. It is very important to remember when booking a venue to try (strong suggestion) avoid a venue with a noise restriction. You will not hear the if you have a lot of guests.
